Please write a 4-5 page argumentative evidence-based essay that answers one (1) of the following questions:
1. The European Reformations are generally seen as marking a major change in European history. In your judgment, what are the major changes caused (or accelerated) by the Reformations, and how did they affect Europe?
2. Imagine that you are living in Germany, France, OR England in 1600. In a (very organized!) letter to your sibling who has emigrated to America, explain how the Reformation has affected your life. Some things to think about when writing this letter: a) it’s a fun form, but you still need an argument up front in your first paragraph. (Dearbrother, overall I must say that ….. ). b) to make your letter effective, you need to think about what was happening in your chosen country. The English Reformation was different than the French or German.) c) To make your letter effective, you need to pick a confessional identity. You don’t get the choice of being an impartial observer–you HAVE to be a Catholic or a Protestant. Then: are you living in a region dominated by the other religion? Are you a mainstream Protestant or a a radical? If you are in a Catholic country, what about the Inquisition? d) Although this is a letter, you still need to CITE YOUR SOURCES, both quoted and paraphrased, and you need to follow basic organizational rules instead of jumping all over.
3. A lot of students commented on the lack of tolerance for other beliefs or practices during the Reformation. Imagine that you are in a room with Martin Luther, Elizabeth I OR Henry of Navarre, a Spanish high ranking member of the Inquisition (call him Tomas!), a radical reformer (your choice — Puritan, Anabaptist, Spiritualist, etc.), and an ordinary person from France, England OR Germany (your choice of town or country, merchant or laborer — no nobles, please, Catholic or Protestant). Write up their debate about the concept of permitting tolerance, and what they think tolerance means (hint: none of them think it means “live and let live”).
